Transitioning

Quick leadership tip if you are transitioning into a new org or a new role.

Ask more questions and make fewer statements.

Here are a few ways this principle will help you win as the new guy/girl:

  • Asking questions rather than making statements expresses humility. People are drawn to humble leaders.

  • Asking questions honors the past and the people from the past. Wanting to genuinely know why and how things have worked over the years shows that you respect other's efforts to get the organization to where it is today.

  • Asking smart, timely, and poignant questions builds credibility with your team. The right question shows you have the experience and skill to assess situations and articulate your thought process.

  • Asking questions leads to wisdom. Wisdom lends itself to better decision-making and change management.

  • Asking good questions helps build new relationships because you get to know people through a Q&A exchange.

  • Asking questions shows you care what people think and know. When people feel cared for, they tend to extend trust to a new relationship.

Transitioning into a new role or organization is tough, but asking questions rather than making statements can build stronger relationships and have a greater impact.
